Gabrielle, 11, is preparing for her first day of middle school and thinking about her new wardrobe.
One day, during a presentation, a classmate makes a hurtful remark about Haiti. Gabrielle realizes that she only knows this country through her parents' stories, while her classmates only know it through television. Her father then suggests that she spend the summer with her grandmother in the countryside, on the island where part of her family was born.
