Charlie is nine years old and has a sense of direction that’s particularly… terrible. One morning, her mom asks her to go out and get some bread for breakfast, just a few steps from home. Distracted, she takes the wrong turn as she leaves the bakery. She gets momentarily lost… but long enough to decide that enough is enough: she needs to take drastic measures to find her way around her own neighborhood!
She sets out to create the most comprehensive map of the neighborhood possible… while making plenty of navigational mistakes, of course! But she’ll learn, correct her mistakes, and refine her map. And soon, a few of her classmates will join the adventure. By sharing their knowledge, the neighborhood will hold no more secrets for anyone!
As Charlie’s story unfolds, we discover the basics of cartography and the tools for finding our way. The map of my neighborhood highlights just how important it is for children to become familiar with their immediate surroundings—their daily routes to school, their friends’ houses, the park, and so on. It’s an ode to thoughtful independence—without getting too lost!
