In the 17th century, the Whites landed in North America with firearms and another war: the one they were making among themselves in Europe. Alliances were made and unmade. The Algonquians and the Hurons sided with the French while the Iroquois allied themselves with the Dutch and the English.
It was in this explosive context that Kondiaronk, a member of the Huron-Pétun nation, was born in 1649. The shaman’s vision at his birth was correct: “The Spirits told me that this newborn from the Bear clan would have considerable powers. As he grew up, he would become an important chief thanks to his many victories.” A great diplomat, Kondiaronk would know how to deal with the French and sign the Great Peace of Montreal treaty in 1701.
